Hoodia Patch Review
The Hoodia Patch arrived on the weight loss market to a huge fanfare, given the relative success of similar products for smoking and contraception, however most anecdotal evidence and reviews of the product tend to be of a mixed to underwhelmed nature.
It seems that the label ‘too good to be true’ is cited for Hoodia patches for a number of reasons.
The first tends to be the quality of the hoodia gordonii that is used in the patches. Hoodia Gordonii is the appetite suppressant cactus that is found in Southern Africa. It is currently one of the most expensive plant supplements around because the raw material - the cactus - is so limited in supply. Also, the export of the cactus is strictly regulated by the South African Government. Consequently genuine Hoodia Gordonii is hard to get. Many products might claim to have the genuine article but there is rarely much evidence to confirm this.
The best way to determine if the patch or supplement that you are taking is genuine is to ask the supplier. A way to confirm if the article is genuine is that they will have a CITES Certificate (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) that is needed to export Hoodia Gordonii out of South Africa. Also in the United States, a US Department of Agriculture (USDA) permit to import terrestrial plants is needed. These pieces of documentation will confirm the authenticity of the product being used.
There is little evidence on websites that sell Hoodia Gordonii patches that they have this documentation so it raises doubts over the quality of the product. You should also confirm what percentage Hoodia Gordonii is in the patch.
